IL Cortile was born in the historic courtyard of Ecole St. Pierre, in the heart of Galata, a district of Istanbul that has brought together different cultures, stories and people for centuries.
Once home to Collège des Frères St. Pierre in the 19th century, the historic building still carries the traces of its past within its walls. Designed by the Italian architect Fossati with influences of Italian architecture, the building stands as a quiet witness to Galata's multicultural identity.
The space that IL Cortile occupies today held a particularly special place in the building's history. It was here that the church choir once rehearsed, while visitors gathered to listen and admire their performances.
Years later, the same courtyard has become a place of gathering once again.
IL Cortile, meaning "the courtyard" in Italian, takes its name from this very setting. Where music once filled the air, today plates, conversations and long tables come together. The echoes of the past have not disappeared; they have simply found a new rhythm.
